PEACEFUL POLAROIDS

Throughout May, the Risk Press Gallery has been displaying the work of Robert Sturman, an artist currently devoted to visually articulating Buddhist principles. His hand-altered Polaroids in the exhibition Mandalay and the Skies of Serendipity were created in Laos, Myanmar, India, and Nepal, and the energy of his manipulated emulsions seductively contrasts with the tranquility and silence of the wandering monks he depicts. Tonight is the closing reception for the show, and the party, like the importance of the beauty and quiet gratitude he promotes, deserves to be huge. 7 p.m.-10 p.m. Free. 8533 Melrose Ave., West Hollywood, (310) 968-7826. Visits to Sturman's Santa Monica studio can be arranged by appointment. Contact him via e-mail: robert@robertsturmanstudio.com.
